This newsletter is a bit late because I’ve been busy rollicking around Hertfordshire on a group press trip with New Look. When I got the invite, I was a bit scared it would be all scary fashion types and me hyper-ventilating in the corner, but instead a lovely bunch of journalists and stylists were whisked off to Birch in Cheshunt (which is a bit like a big trendy boarding school) to bake bread, have a sound bath, eat fabulous food and swan around wearing New Look clothes. Heaven. The journey home through London traffic during a train strike however - less than heavenly. In an ideal world I would have spent those long hours doing something useful like writing this newsletter, but I feel sick if I try to do anything productive in the car, so instead I just listened to podcasts.
Honestly, how did we survive pre-podcast? What did we do with our ears? I spend so much of my day listening to podcasts that I feel a bit stressed when I accidentally start the washing up without sticking one on. While I’m not sure this allergy to silence is entirely healthy, it does mean I’ve managed to find some great podcasts in my time. These are my favourites..
Chat
As a big fan of their previous podcast, Fortunately, I was sad when Fi and Jane left the BBC for The Times - but luckily they’re back with a new podcast, which is equally reassuring with its wise and gentle chat.
In Writing with Hattie Crisell
I love podcasts that feel like they might make me better at my job - In Writing with Hattie Crisell is one of them. There’s a wide breadth of guests, from comedians to poets to journalists, and it’s fascinating to hear about their writing processes. In case you’re wondering, mine is to leave everything until the last minute and then frantically write it on my phone while on the tube. And if you’re particularly interested in writing then Always Take Notes is worth checking out too.
I mean, this feels like the OG podcast so truly needs no introduction from me, but if you haven’t listened, it’s time to treat yourself to the back catalogue (especially as it’s currently on a break). My sister and I have both listened to the Tash Demetriou episodes about 70 times each. What I like about Adam is that unlike many podcast hosts, he doesn’t just blow smoke up his guests’ you-know-whats, and instead politely challenges them where necessary. Plus I like his dog.
Learning
I know everyone bangs on about The Rest Is History but this is my favourite podcast for learning about the olden days. I really enjoyed the recent episode about the Home Front during WW2. There’s also a good new spin-off in the form of History’s Greatest Cities - my most unpopular opinion is that I can’t stand Berlin, but I found that particular episode very enjoyable.
I promise this isn’t just going to be a list of history podcasts but this one is simply brilliant for bringing history to life. You really must listen to the episode on The Black Death - the drama of it!
A handbrake turn from history to current affairs. I previously listened to The Rest Is Politics, but it was so downbeat about the state of things it gave me actual anxiety. The News Agents is more informative and balanced. According to Jeremy Hunt the episode on childcare actually fed into his new funding policy (and can I just add HOORAY!)
I recently had to cram Shakespeare knowledge for reasons I cannot yet divulge (oooh she’s mysterious!), and discovered this little gem. While I can hardly believe anyone has found it within themselves to make a podcast going through the plot, characters and language of every Shakespeare play, but I am very grateful, and it’s perfect if you want to swot up before going to see a play!
Lols
Yes, yes, it’s my cousin’s podcast, but I genuinely love this so much. Comedians Helen Bauer and Catherine Bohart attempt to solve listener problems while also discussing their own (hectic) lives. This is my go-to podcast when I’m feeling stressed because I know it will make me laugh and soothe my soul.
Off Menu
I’ve never claimed to be a foodie (mainly because I live off ready-made pasta sauce and Linda McCartney sausages), but I still enjoy hearing people’s dream menus on this hilarious podcast hosted by Ed Gamble and James Acaster. Just make sure you skip past those episodes where they have overly earnest American celebs on…
Cuddle Club
Comedian Lou Sanders’ offering is probably a bit of a Marmite podcast, but personally I love it. I’ve just spent quite a few minutes trying to work out how to describe its contents, but I can’t, so maybe just give it a listen. I really enjoyed the episode with Self Esteem.
I must also give special mention to some brilliant podcasts by friends/colleagues (because I work in an industry where everyone is really talented - ugh). My mate Amit Katwala is truly the star of The WIRED Podcast, my former amazing editor Jo Elvin has recently launched the fascinating Fame and You magazine columnist Rosie Green’s How to Heal a Broken Heart is so gripping even if you do not currently have a broken heart. Give them a try.

Thank you Sophie! Thrilled to see this x
